Value for money
A powerful VPN
Summary : Cyberghost VPN offers reasonable fees, a no logging policy and a robust and highly powerful server pool. However we think at the time being hidemyass is a better alternative.
Affirmative, the Internet had never been a place meant to be anonymous – but it also has never meant to be the huge identity trap it is now. Once a perfect place for communication and expression, it mutated into a gigantic microphone, where you dictate all your secrets, all your hopes, and your very being right into the data bases of business men, authorities and politicians, all of them united in one common main goal: control!
Once being a citizen you are now ‘a potential’, mainly a potential wrong doer – up to the point, where it gets bizarre, where everybody is treated as a potential threat to billions of other potential threats.
CyberGhost VPN is here to provide you the tools to correct, what has gone wrong, and brings more privacy, freedom and even security to your Internet. Equipped with more than 60 servers in different European and non European countries and a true passion for a free Internet, the service offers reasonable fees, a no logging policy and a robust and highly powerful server pool.
CyberGhost S.R.L. has been founded in Bucharest, Romania, in 2011, after the service progressed in its old home country Germany from a small 3-to-5-people ‘just-for-the-fun-of-it’ to one of the most known European VPN start ups.
Nowadays CyberGhost S.R.L. consists of about 20 employees, all of them introduced on the ‘family page’ of CyberGhost’s homepage. In 2011 the company hit the 1 million users mark for its VPN service, and extended its product line to a cloud, a free proxy and a Privacy Browser for Apple’s i-devices. Based on their years of experience in the field of Internet anonymity, networking and their own net lobbying, the company accomplishes important contributions regarding the support of civil rights, a free society and an uncensored Internet culture.
Supported protocols and operating systems
CyberGhost VPN works with both important protocols.[message]OpenVPN
An easy going OpenVPN windows client for 7, Vista and XP (32/64 bit) is available for convenient use. One can download the client for free via their website : click here
For other operating systems, mobile devices and PPTP you will need to manually configure the service, which is (most of the time) an easy going task.
For subscribers CyberGhost provides instructions on how to set up an OpenVPN connection as well as configuration files for Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and Android.
Users with a Premium or Premium plus subscription, who want to use their Windows OS with CyberGhost and PPTP will also find an easy to understand How to. Besides that, CyberGhost offers a ‘Privacy Browser’ for iOS, which includes video download possibilities and an anonymous trash e-mail feature. A free proxy is available at the service’s homepage.
The VPN operates with all Internet software available, including all browsers like Opera, Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. It also works great with Download Managers, P2P software, chat programs, Skype and virtually everything else, that gateways you to the digital world outside. Only exception: Per default you can’t send out e-mails anonymously to prevent spam abuse of the service.
Network description & server pool
Over the past years, CyberGhost VPN established a robust and highly powerful server pool, consisting of 70 servers in 15 different countries in East and West Europe and the USA, among them Germany, Finland, Romania, France, Great Britain, Sweden and Denmark, accompanied by stand by servers. Users can practically always count on a fast nearby server.
Servers are ranked ‘Premium’ and ‘VIP’. When using the Free Service, users will be routed to a server chosen by CyberGhost with a maximum speed of 1 MBit/s. Subscribers will gain access to all (‘Premium Plus’ plan) or nearly all servers (‘Premium’ and ‘Classic’ plan). The latter lack the VIP servers with no bandwith maximum and are bound to a maximum speed of 8 MBit/s.

The CyberGhost client
CyberGhost provides an easy going Windows client for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP, both 32 and 64 bits, which is developed in-house and constantly in progress.
It’s extremely simple to use and shoots you right out of the box into the CyberGhost universe, starting with the log-in dialog:
In the main interface of CyberGhost you can connect directly to the CyberGhost network by clicking on ‘Connect to VPN’ or select a server manually – and with the server the country you wish to surf from.
As you can see, each server is tagged by the characteristics ‘Speed’ and ‘Anonymity’ to help you decide, which one you’d like to use. The idea behind: Even though you are anonymized anyway just by the fact, that you sail along under a wrong flag (your new IP address), you can strengthen that anonymity by choosing a server with an ‘optimal’ score. The score simply means, that on the respective server more people are surfing with the same IP address, therefore one single surfer is even harder to be recognized. Vice versa it also means, that the more people are using one server, the bandwith might be reduced. However, the scores for ‘anonymity’ do not reflect your ‘basic’ anonymity in any way.
When connecting to a server, the client might ask you, if he should correct the current system time to the time zone, the server to be used is located in. The reason is, that some websites check the time zone of their visitors and block their content, if found a different one from their own.
AntiSpy & other features
CyberGhost VPN does not only hide your original IP address and provides you with a different one. Some of its other features are an instant blockade, if your VPN connection is interrupted, a ramp to US video portals (to be continued) and an AntiSpy module, which extends your privacy in the Internet by blocking certain systems and programs settings, e.g. for the Internet Explorer and the Windows Media Player.
After the arrest of a few anonymous hackers, because their VPN provider handed out the log files to the FBI, the log policy of a VPN service became even more crucial than before. As CyberGhost states, when asked, the company had never logged before that event and does not do it now. “We are widely aware, that citizens of certain countries are putting at risk of their lives, if we were open to store information about our users and share with authorities regardless their origins. we will not do that! Ever”
Support is available via e-mail, in German and English, Live Chat support is also available, but could be offline after normal working hours (Eastern Europe time).
When we tried the support several times during a period of 10 days, we always got replies within 2 hours which is a good result.
